In his composition Quatre épigrammes du temps, written
for piccolo/flute/alto flute/bass flute, clarinet/bass
clarinet, vibraphone/cajón, piano, violin, and cello,
created in 2019, Mladen Tarbuk continues to grapple with
the passage of time in music, or the temporality of music,
a journey he began in 1990 with the song cycle Medida del
tiempo, and later pursued in a series of compositions.
According to the composer, in order to explore the
perception of the arrow of time, he selected semi-series
for his Four Epigrams about Time that utilize all the basic
intervals – from the minor second to the perfect fourth –
without repeating any interval, thus avoiding the melodic
occurrence of the tritone, while the other intervals are
derived from the basic ones. The piece was premiered by
the Mimitabu Ensemble, conducted by Rei Munakata at
the Music Tribune in Opatija on November 8, 2019.
