Ante Knešaurek composed his Organ Mass in 2008 at the
incentive of Pavao Mašić, the organist of St. Mark’s Church
in Zagreb, who also performed it on its premiere. Following
in the footsteps of similar works by François Couperin,
Girolamo Frescobaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach and Olivier
Messiaen, according to the composer, the concept of the
work approaches pre-conciliar liturgical thought. The major
seventh interval which commences the Kyrie eleison is a kind
of acclamation, and this micro-motif extends throughout
all the movements of the Mass. In today’s understanding of
post-conciliar liturgy – the time during which this Mass is
composed – it doesn’t find its place during the service itself
but is understood as a kind of homage to the past and its
traditions, as a set of spiritual meditations.
