The composition S/UMAS Summarum was created at the initiative of Davorka Begović
and Gordan Tudor and is dedicated to the ensemble S/UMAS, which premiered it at
the Izlog suvremenog zvuka (Showroom of Contemporary Sound) festival in 2016,
organized by the SC Music Salon. This is the first piece originally composed specifically
for this newly established ensemble, with the aim of introducing young musicians
to new sound spheres that go beyond performance alone, emphasizing exploration,
collaboration, attentive listening, reflection on musical content, and improvisation. The
goal was to create a work with a strong authorial imprint that would meet the challenges
of a festival focused on contemporary, experimental music and improvisation, such as
the Showroom of Contemporary Sound, while also addressing the unique characteristics
of the ensemble, including its composition and the number of performers. Ana Horvat
expanded the classical instrumentation by incorporating various sound objects, such
as glass bottles, slide whistles, and clay bird calls in the first two movements, while
the third and fourth movements were written for acoustic instruments with
extended techniques and repetitions. The composition was also featured on the
recording S/UMAS – It is what it is, released by HDS and Cantus in 2021, which
included a recording of the performance from the 55th Music Tribune in Opatija.
