Skender, Ivan Josip: Cinq croquis | Five Croquis for clarinet, violoncello and piano

 

Ivan Josip Skender composed Cinq croquis or Five Croquis in 2015 on the commission of his long-term associates, sisters Zita and Nadia Varga, cellist and pianist. The composition was written for clarinet, cello, and piano. This vivid work, whose picturesque atmosphere, broad color spectrum, and ethereal texture evoke bygone times, has been performed many times in different versions, such as the one for clarinet, viola, and piano. The composition consists of five movements of contrasting characters and varying durations that can be performed in any order or, as the composer suggests, “depending on the mood the musicians wish to create, that is, as they prefer.”
