The three selected works in this edition of piano works by Ivana Lang (Zagreb, 1912-Zagreb, 1982) all share a common thread. The composer used these miniature piano forms in the form of a prelude to express her ideas through smaller melodic-rhythmic motifs that she then transforms into character-contrasting miniatures with a clear sense of melody (sometimes intoned using an association to a series of narrow intervals typical of the Istrian and the Primorje regions of Croatia), harmony (sometimes achieved by using simpler soundscapes, all the way to more complex borderline tonal solutions) and tonal coloring achieved through the use of pedaling possibilities, which the composer, as an experienced pianist, noted precisely and deliberately in order to realize her artistic vision.

The autographs and transcripts were compared to ensure that all dynamics, articulation, and pedal markings were faithfully copied into this modern sheet music edition. The composer’s background as a pianist and piano teacher meant that she wrote most of her works for her students, who she also worked with on preparing performances, taking into account the level of expertise necessary for certain technical challenges and the experience in shaping melodic phrases and articulation for the piano. Consequently, there are differences in certain details, such as dynamics or individual tone changes, between transcripts and the autograph. In preparing this edition, the available archived sheet music was analyzed and editorially selected solutions are explained in separate notes.
