Stanko Horvat wrote Deux poèmes de Guillaume Apollinaire or Two Poems according to Guillaume Apollinaire, for twelve singers, commissioned by the Music Biennale Zagreb, during his mature period. Inspired by poetry, French culture, and vocal music, Horvat created a composition to the verses of Guillaume Apollinaire, a well-known French surrealist poet from the early 20th century. The composer deemed the commission as ‘a stroke of luck’, due to both the first-rate ensemble for which it was written and the inspiration he received from Apollinaire’s poetry, which captivated him from the start. The two-part cycle for twelve voices was completed on September 7, 1990, and consists of the nostalgic-melancholic Hier (Yesterday), and the playful and sassy Le Pont (The Bridge), featuring a masterfully and knowledgeably formed spectrum of tonal colors and layered textures, which reflect the atmosphere and features of Apollinaire’s verses, almost merging with them at times. John Poole and the Groupe vocal de France premiered the composition at the Croatian Music Institute on April 11, 1991 as part of the MBZ.
