Ruždjak, Marko
Ruždjak, Marko:
La Frontera poema en varios metros, idiomas, y estilos for soprano and chamber orchestra
2
Commissioned by the Music Biennale Zagreb and composed in 2006, La Frontera – Poema en varios metros, idiomas, y estilos for soprano and chamber orchestra by Marko Ruždjak is imbued with textual-semantic elements embodied in the poetry of four female authors from different regions and periods: 20th-century American scholar of Mexican descent Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa, 17th-century Mexican nun Juana Inés de la Cruz, 12th-century French troubadour from Provence Beatritz de Dia, and 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson. This pro-feminist piece – characterized by Ruždjak’s recognizable compositional expression – shares its title with the autobiographical literary work of Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa, which deals with life and growing up on the U.S. (Texas) – México border. According to the composer, the title refers more to the frontier area than to the demarcation, deconstructing and transcending the concept of the border as an inviolable line while simultaneously suggesting the possibility of crossing it. La Frontera was premiered at the Music Biennale Zagreb in 2007 by soprano Davorka Horvat and the Cantus Ensemble, under the baton of Luca Pfaff, and it brought Marko Ruždjak the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Award in the field of musical arts.
