Jakopović, Boris: Stage dimmed, for chamber ensemble

Stage dimmed for chamber ensemble shows us a partial departure from Boris Jakopović’s previous compositional techniques. Following the mood and musical ideas he wanted to convey with the piece, he chose the so-called collage technique. The polystylism of this work is also reflected in its several paraphrases, i.e. reminiscences of his own and other authors’ works, carefully elaborated and characterized by sudden transitions between episodes of an elegiac kind and minimalist expression with the energetic, occasionally even aggressive episodes which – according to the composer – range from constructive and punctilious to destructive and seemingly less precise ones. This compositional approach reflects the author’s thoughts on the ongoing situation in Ukraine, where he went to college and with which he feels a particular connection, infused with his own feelings of helplessness and anger.

The composition was premiered on December 17, 2022 in the Vatroslav Lisinski Small Hall by the Cantus Ensemble, under the baton of their artistic director Berislav Šipuš.
