The creation of the work is linked to the organist Čedomil Dugan and the inauguration of the Zagreb Cathedral organ. Lučić originally composed the Elegy for organ solo in 1935, but adapted it for a large symphony orchestra at the encouragement of Lovro pl. Matačić. Although there is no record of its organ premiere, the orchestral version of the work was first performed at the Croatian Music Institute by the then Society Orchestra led by Rudolf Matz on June 11, 1937. Music critic Branimir Ivakić wrote the following in Obzor: “Lučić’s Elegy reveals the expertise of an experienced composer in creating a strong pathos of the musical material within a strictly academic framework. There is also a hint of the author’s preference for the German late romantics. Although his instrumentation is sonorous, the composer does not overemphasize it.”8 The work was performed again the following year at the concert of the Zagreb Philharmonic held on February 3, 1938 at the Croatian Music Institute led by Lovro pl.
