Lamentation (is when grief pours out) is a kind of composer’s call for introspection conveyed through an almost mantric rhythmic formula of an ostinato character as the central element of the composition’s internal pulse of a sort. Listeners are invited to immerse themselves in a collective musical lamentation through the use of the slow changes of harmonies and melodic cells moving between sections, as well as their simplicity and clear, sincere compositional expression. The composition was premiered by the Cantus Ensemble led by Berislav Šipuš at the author’s concert held on October 15, 2019. This performance is featured on Ivana Kiš’s album (Cantus, 2022), which also includes the piece Krug for brass and percussion octet, available in the sheet music edition from Ars Croatica.
