Palanović, Dubravko: Tu Alma y la mía, for flute and piano

In the composition Tu alma y la mía for flute and piano, Dubravko Palanović musically narrates a story of a sort about the universality of human relationships through their different stages and aspects. The flute plays a leading role in these three stories. Each of the three movements portrays distinct characters by employing a variety of flute techniques and approaches to the instrument, whose melodic material is reflected in the partner piano section. From the mysteriously cautious first movement, through an unrestrained reflection of freedom in the second movement, to the finale with a clear formal layout, whose objective is to convey through sound the turbulence and force of the other side of humanity, and lingering hope and perseverance that “moral and ethical values and spiritual wealth will be attained”, as the composer stated.

 

The work was commissioned by the Osor Musical Evenings, and was first performed by flautist Renata Penezić and pianist Zrinka Ivančić Cikojević on July 25, 2019, at the 44th edition of this festival. Their interpretation is also included on the composer’s first author CD (Cantus, 2023), released as part of the Contemporary Croatian Composers edition.
