Bradić, Srećko: Sorrow, for string orchestra

The composition Sorrow for string orchestra was inspired by a Van Gogh drawing of the same name and a quote from the French writer Jules Michelet: “Why is there a woman alone on earth – abandoned?” The work was commissioned by the Osor Musical Evenings festival, where it was first performed by the Acoustic Project Strings ensemble on August 2, 2020. That same year, Bradić also received the Boris Papandopulo Award of the Croatian Composers’ Society, which is given for original work in the field of serious music, for this composition. The award note highlighted that “the string corpus’ sound unity is characterized by logical and masterful orchestration and, like the form of the work itself, it gives an impression of clarity that benefits both the interpreters and the listeners.”
