Ruždjak, Marko: Ubu, for mixed choir a cappella

In the anthology of the Music Biennale Zagreb, the festival where it was first performed, Dubravko Detoni described Marko Ruždjak’s composition Ubu for mixed choir a cappella as “both a free and thought-out work, transformed and then set in the molds of, above all, transparent shapes” – the composer’s dedication to the human voice. A song similar to speech, speech that is almost singing, creates a natural pulsation and sound color, occasionally sounding like percussion, which is a common feature of Ruždjak’sworks. Ubu was composed in 1985, and it was first performed by the Croatian Radiotelevision Choir led by Igor Kuljerić on April 4, 1993 at the Croatian Music Institute, as part of the 17th Music Biennale Zagreb. The work is included in the anthology of Croatian choral music. In 1986, Ruždjak won the annual Vladimir Nazor Award for this work.
