Dedić, Srđan: Self-Fulfilling Prophecies, for 14 players

Self-Fulfilling Prophecies, for 14 players
2
Srđan Dedić wrote the composition Self-Fulfilling Prophecies on the commission of the Osor Musical Evenings and dedicated it to the Cantus Ensemble, which premiered it led by the conductor Berislav Šipuš at the opening of the 41st edition of the festival on July 17, 2016. The composition was a result of the composer’s interest in the emergence of the so-called “self-fulfilling prophecy” (a term coined by the American sociologist Robert K. Merton in 1948), that is, how our own predictions of a goal influence our actions and ultimately lead to the realization of that prediction, i.e. the “fulfillment of the prophecy”.

For this composition, Srđan Dedić received the Boris Papandopulo Award of the Croatian Composers’ Society (in 2016), which is awarded to the most outstanding contemporary classical music work.
