Parać, Frano: Carmina Krležiana | Missa Maruliana

In the aesthetic, compositional, technical and all other kinds of music looseness from the last quartet of the 20th century, the Croatian composer Frano Parać managed to find his recognizable place thanks to his unmistakable musical instinct, skillful writing and clearly expressed belief that an artist must raise his voice, because the noise all around could drown him. Defying it, Parać finds support in the areas of the past music untouched by the crisis: in the rhythmic stability of the baroque, but eschewing its dramatical counterpoint, in the formal clarity of the classicism, but avoiding the hubs of its thematic conflicts, and in the  emotional openness of romanticism, but avoiding its tonal doubts.

 

The two extensive vocal-instrumental works by Parać featured on this CD represent an almost canonical repertoire of the 20th century Croatian music. They connect Parać’s opus with the all-time Croatian literature greats – Marko Marulić (1450 – 1524) and Miroslav Krleža (1893 – 1981), which symbolically depicts the invisible arc from Croatian literary origins to Parać’s contemporary writings.
