Končić, Ivan: Emerson Études

The Emerson Études were commissioned by the Organizing Committee of the 28th International Young Virtuoso, Zagreb 2022, Piano Competition. The Committee proposed that I write compositions-études that would be performed as predefined compositions by a Croatian author at this competition.

The challenge in writing them was to tailor each of the five études to the particular age of the performer. In that regard, I have tried to go back to my school days and remember the problems related to reading new material. In doing so, I also remembered the then musical influences outside the curriculum that shaped my musical ear a great deal, but also awoke the love for selfexpression, that is to say composing. A major influence was the British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
