J. S.-S. stands for Josip Stolzer-Slavenski (1896-1955). The pieces were written in 1965, on the tenth anniversary of his death. The aleatory notation, long melodic lines and complex rhythmic patterns allude to some aspects of Slavenski’s idiom.

The suite was originally written for the oboe; the idea for a clarinet version recently came from Petar Bergamo. The transposition (a fifth lower than the oboe original) necessitated some pitch register modifications, though all other features of the original have remained unaltered.
